Without much fanfare, Google on Wednesday launched a brand new lite app for managing photographs on your phone.
Called Google Gallery Go, the app is intended to be “a smart, light and fast photo and video gallery built by Google to help you”.

The announcement was part of Google’s Nigerian roadshow, but the app is also available in South Africa.
Like most lite apps, Gallery Go weighs in as an 8.9MB download, but does feature tools to help manage and adjust your device’s photo library.

“Each night, Gallery Go will automatically organize your photos to group by: People, Selfies, Nature, Animals, Documents, Videos and Movies,” Google explains on the app’s description.
“Gallery Go has easy to use photo editing tools, such as auto-enhance which will make your photos look their best with one-tap.”
Gallery Go can also function offline.
The app also supports folder creation, and the ability to view specific folders (one upping the more mature Google Photos app too).
The ability to copy to microSD expansion cards is also included — an important feature for cheaper Android phones with low storage.
Missing however is the ability to “trash” files, a feature found on Google Photos, and the presence of Lens and Assistant helpers within the app. And no, it seems to only function as an offline gallery app, and doesn’t allow you to view pictures stored on your Google cloud.
The app’s currently available to download from the Play Store, and should work on Android Go and traditional Android smartphones.
