Imagine being charged R18 300 instead of R183 for an Uber trip across town. That’s exactly what some riders experienced in the States this week.
According to the Washington Post, some riders in San Diego and Washington DC used the app this week, but were charged 100 times the fee.

WTF, @Uber, you charged $1,308 to my card instead of $13.08?! (Second screenshot shows the same route fare a moment later; it’s #ComicCon so it’s fluctuating rapidly.) pic.twitter.com/2S6sxRmnRc

@uber @ubersupport same story here, sent multiple messages about a $3000 charge for a 30 minute cab ride. This is completely unacceptable.

@Uber_Support I took a 10 minute Uber that was supposed to cost $11.36 but my account now has a pending amount of $1113.00 and there is no way to contact customer service over the phone to dispute the charge. Can some pls let me know what’s being done about this glitch?!?!?

According to Uber, it was indeed a glitch that was eventually rectified. The transport firm also confirmed that it would reimburse riders without them needing to dispute the prices.
Sucks for drivers, tbh.
