Twitter now plans to memorialise deceased users’ accounts, not delete them

Twitter memorialise accounts

Twitter will not remove inactive accounts on its platform until it introduces a way to memorialise the accounts of deceased users.

The news comes after the company received backlash for revealing plans to delete Twitter accounts that haven’t been signed into for over six months this December.

“We’ve heard you on the impact that this would have on the accounts of the deceased. This was a miss on our part. We will not be removing any inactive accounts until we create a new way for people to memorialize accounts,” the company clarified in a Twitter thread on Thursday.

Additionally, Twitter also noted that it will review its policies regarding inactive accounts to comply with privacy regulations around the world.

“We apologize for the confusion and concerns we caused and will keep you posted,” the company concluded.
