Instagram on Wednesday announced that it will now ask users for their birthday information in order to protect its younger members.
According to the company, many countries require users to be 13 years or older to have an account on the platform, and the new date of birth requirement will help enforce this rule.

“Asking for this information will help prevent underage people from joining Instagram, help us keep young people safer and enable more age-appropriate experiences overall,” Insta explained on its blog.
Additionally, the company also noted that birthdays will not be publicly visible to other users.
The new requirement comes after the social network launched a range of security features to help curb the spread of misinformation and reduce bullying on its platform.
