Mxit, other local apps added to Samsung app store

Samsung plans to introduce three new local apps to its app store. The three apps are Mxit, DStv Mobile Decoder and PriceCheck. These apps will be available for download on all of Samsung’s Android devices, excluding tablets.

Brett Loubser, the B2C Apps Development lead at Samsung says, “There is no doubt that the need for locally relevant content is growing among consumers and that this growth demands a larger variety of apps across different interest areas. It is with this in mind, that we have partnered with leading brands locally in increasing the access to locally relevant apps for our consumers – testament to our commitment to the development of applications and strong partnerships alike.”

Mxit is free instant messaging software which works on a wide range of phones. The company was recently purchased by World of Avatar. Juan du Toit, Mxit marketing managers says, “This partnership enables us to reach a larger audience who are already using Samsung devices, opening up the market for us, and of course creating opportunity for Samsung consumers to communicate more easily and conveniently through MXit.”

The DStv Mobile Decoder application works in conjunction with the Drifta, a USB device which broadcasts satellite signals to a computer. Mark Rayner, DSTv Mobile GM says, “our partnership with Samsung becomes a key value add for our consumers – affording them constant access to our services, regardless of location”.

PriceCheck is a shopping comparison website which is making its first foray into the mobile market. Charl Mocke of PriceCheck claims that his product “provides the consumer with immediate insight into the best online deals available, saving both time and money”.

Loubser concludes by saying, “We look forward to of the uptake of these applications and to growing our partnerships — not only with our existing partners but with new ones too,”
