The Child Pad slate serves up delicious Ice Cream Sandwich for kids

Ah, children. With their sticky fingers and quietly inquisitive minds, are tablets the ideal platform for these precious little bundles of noise? Archos thinks so and with the release of its first kid-friendly Android 4.0 tablet, the 7-inch Child Pad, children around the world can now experience the creamy goodness of Ice Cream Sandwich.

Let’s dig into the hardware specs. The Child Pad has a 1Ghz CPU, a gig of RAM, a “Mobile Parental Filter” and a retail price of US$129. Wondering about the Mobile Parental Filter? The inane press release describes it as “a way of ensuring a safe tablet environment for kids and peace of mind for parents.” Have mercy on the children and shield them from the smut, Archos please!

The specifications are fairly meek but what does a kid need with a quad-core CPU? Nothing really, the portfolio of 10 000 apps should sort them out. Not 10 000 apps already installed of course, you’ll need to access the AppLibs Kids App Store. But hey, Archos promises that Angry Birds will be made instantly available for the Child Pad so at least mom and dad will have something to fool around with while junior learns how to recharge the device.

No other details have been made available. Come March, kids and parents alike can snap up the Archos Child Pad and dig into its limited potential for “education”.
