Dick move of the week: Wii U games will only be ‘HD ready’ at launch

Wii U Super Mario

This source confirms it. Nintendo’s Wii U can support full-HD, or 1080p content but at launch, none of its first-party games will support this standard full-HD format.

God, Nintendo. First you screw us by flooding the market with crapware, now this. Not cool man.

According to a Nintendo rep roaming the E3 floor, while the Wii U can run 1080p, hot titles like Super Mario and Pikmin will ship at 720p. This is to ensure a solid “60 FPS”. Another nail in the coffin: the rep couldn’t confirm or deny that Wii U titles can even be upscaled to 1080p.

This means one of two things, or both. Either 1 — Nintendo and its third-party devs are scared to push this new (and under-powered) hardware and/or 2 — Nintendo doesn’t care about full HD. A Nintendo of America rep said, “We do not focus on technology specs. We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers.” Yeah, right. Tell that to the muddy-brown graphics we left behind in the 2000s.

We’ll give the Wii U a chance for now. But don’t let us catch you releasing games in 720p again, mister.
