Teen dies playing Diablo 3

The last time a gamer died, World of Warcraft was the killer. This time, Blizzard’s Diablo 3 plays the role of the grim reaper. An 18 year old Taiwanese gamer was found on 15 July in a private booth at an internet cafe, rushed to hospital and pronounced dead at the scene.

The teen, only known as Chuang booked a booth on 13 July for a secluded gaming session.

Blizzard’s statement divorces it from the death:

We’re saddened to hear this news, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We don’t feel it would be appropriate for us to comment further without knowing all of the circumstances involved. While we recognise that it’s ultimately up to each individual or their parent or guardian to determine playing habits, we feel that moderation is clearly important, and that a person’s day-to-day life should take precedence over any form of entertainment.

Cause of death? The police can only speculate, but all signs point to “cardiovascular problems” after sitting still for so long. It’s a horrible loss, and a terrible (or amazing) way of checking out.

Remember kids, regular stretches during a marathon gaming session and if you find yourself seated and peeing in a bottle of Mountain Dew, it’s time to switch off the PC.
