Samsung Display to demo 5.5-inch flexible screens at CES 2013

According to CNET, Samsung Display, a spin-off from Samsung Electronics, is set to showcase a range of 5.5-inch flexible smartphone screens at CES 2013. The development of flexible screens is something that Gearburn has known about for some time, however this demo will be one of the rare occasions where the public would be able to experience these screens first-hand.

The demo displays will offer 1280×720 HD resolution, at an impressive 276 PPI. Samsung Display have stated that these screens are intended for smartphone usage. This got us thinking about which device Samsung would be integrated. The 5.5-inch dimensions is a prefect match for the Note II, so could a flexible display be a new feature touted by a potential “Note III” device?

The Note II is definitely Samsung’s flagship smart-device, but it has to play second fiddle to the wildly popular Galaxy S III, which is the reigning king of 2012, scooping numerous awards as the smartphone of the year. But a flexible display is apparently not in the works for a future “S IV” device according to The Verge and International Business Times.

The reason for such interest in a flexible display stretches further than it simply being a marketing gimmick. A flexible display essentially means the screen is virtually unbreakable, a feature that most users would gladly welcome.

Samsung Display also stated that although these demo units can bend, the company is still in the process of designing displays that can be rolled up. We can’t wait to see this flexible display technology integrated into devices in the coming years.
