Corning Gorilla Glass 3 outed [CES]

Gorilla Glass 3 now has “native damage resistance” which eliminates lateral cracking, ultimately delivering less splintering of the glass, if damaged. The video demos the a series of scratch tests on the older Gorilla Glass 1 and 2. Unsurprisingly, when it comes to Gorilla Glass 3, the sample remains unblemished.

The atomic structure of the glass has been changed, so it’s harder to break. Scratches will also be less visible and devices will be less prone to fractures. This is all according to the fairly dry video from Corning at CES.

The demonstration at the halfway point fares a little better when it comes to action. A metal ball is shot out of a tube and into alternative strengthened aluminosilicate glass (used in most devices like the iPhone 4/5), which shatters. When the same test is performed on Gorilla Glass 3, it survives the ordeal. The incline of the tube is then raised even further, but still Gorilla Glass 3 refuses to buckle or shatter.

The final, and most impressive test is when a 50Kg pressure test is applied to the surface of Gorilla Glass 3 and still, no fractures. It’s impressive stuff, but don’t worry about missing out on the Gorilla Glass 3 action as it’ll be implemented in most high-end devices by year-end.
