The most important part of our devices, namely the screen, is getting even tougher with the introduction of Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Next week at CES 2012, Corning plans to launch the third iteration of its life-saving screen technology. Corning will also introduce a new range of Optic Cables which “extend data transmission range past the limits of copper-based cables”, whatever that means.
Some digging reveals information for Gorilla Glass 3. Engadget says that the new screens will be three times more scratch-resistant, visible scratches are reduced by 40% and if the glass becomes flawed (scratched or chipped) there’s now 50% more “retained strength”.
Wendell P. Weeks, president of Corning reveals very little of the Gorilla Glass 3 and nameless Optical Cable technology: “These new innovations build on the increasingly important and continually evolving role of highly engineered glass technologies in delivering improved product performance and functionality through touch capabilities, protective cover glass, and device connectivity.” See what we mean? Although on Corning’s official website, the Optical Cable is named “Thunderbolt”. Shades of Mac?
Gorilla Glass is practically an industry standard, and is used in everything from mobile phones to tablets, such as the Lumia 920 and Samsung Galaxy S III. It’s one of those things we forget about, until we need it. Look for Gorilla Glass 3, among other cool new toys, to début at this year’s CES in Las Vegas.
