The Huawei Ascend family of smartphones is getting another sibling with the Ascend G710. Although details are scarce (and unconfirmed) it looks like it won’t be the older sibling of the bunch, but more so the middle child due to its display specs.

According to Engadget, and their source Evleaks, the G710 will sport a 5-inch display running a 1.5GHz processor, exactly the same as the Ascend D2. Unlike the D2 though, the resolution has been dropped to 720p, an unusual choice for a 5-inch display, which takes it out of the realm of high-end smartphone.
A 720p display will certainly have battery-life benefits, but the camera and storage specs will reveal exactly what Huawei are trying to achieve with the G710.
The D2 had a 13-megapixel rear camera, 1.3-megapixel front camera and 2GB of RAM. The D1, on the other hand, also sporting a 720p display, 1.5GHz processor (all in a 4.5-inch display though) only had 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel rear camera.
For all intents and purposes though, it seems that the G710 might fit somewhere smack between the D1 and D2 in specs and look. Perhaps they should consider renaming it to the ‘Ascend D one-and-three-quarters’?
