This week, Samsung’s exhibiting a 10.1-inch 2560×1600 display for tablets as well as a 13.3-inch 3200×1800 effort for notebooks. These will be featured, among many other state-of-the-art display technologies, at the SID (Society for Information Display) Event. Not only are these resolutions eye-bleedingly sharp, they also offer 30% power-savings compared to current LCDs.

If these prototypes hit the market as notebook or tablet displays now, they will simply blow competition out of the water. As mentioned by The Verge, this is in direct competition with Apple’s Retina and Google’s Pixel displays. The 13.3-inch Retina’s display comes in at a mere 2560 x 1600.
Another bright spotlight is expected to be on the 4.99-inch Full HD Active-Matrix OLED display for mobiles. According to Business Wire, this display can “provide text messages 2.2 times clearer than HD (1280×720) displays.” Samsung’s Diamond Pixel technology brings us greater RGB reproduction rates as well as “local-dimming control in direct LCD panels.” The local-dimming control refers to the “vivid color rendering” as well as “incredible black images, 80 percent brightness uniformity, and a remarkably enhanced contrast ratio.”
More eye-candy to be seen at the event are Samsung’s 85-inch ultra HD TV panel, and a 23-inch multi-touch LCD display. The former also uses local-dimming control, while the latter picks up 10 touch points simultaneously and enables “playing of the piano with exceptional finesse, or drawing a highly detailed picture on a monitor or a tablet.”
Competition in the display arena seems to be heating up as major players are showcasing innovative engineering left and right. The other massive South Korean tech giant, LG, is also turning heads at this year’s SID event with its flexible screen technology. Last week we saw Sharp boast its IGZO display technology.
