Sony wants to sell 5-million PS4s by March 2014

You can’t blame Sony for having grand plans with the PS4. At the Tokyo Game Show, Sony took the stage at its keynote speech and said that its plan is to sell over 5-million PS4s by the end of its fiscal year, which is March 2014. With 79.10-million overall sales for the PS3 (so far), a seven-month, 5-million PS4 sales prediction doesn’t seem to far off. Just slap Grand Theft Auto V in every box and watch the sales soar.

There’s one small issue though, says Engadget. The PS4’s sales revenue may be significantly hampered by its Japan launch, which is set a full three months after the US and Europe launch. Let’s put the PS3 sales into more context. From the PS3’s launch month and year, November 2006 until end of fiscal year March 2007, Sony sold 5.5-million PS3s. Will it see more success with the PS4? The machine is well priced at US$399 (R4 000) compared to the US$490 (R5 000) Xbox One, so on price alone the PS4 will shift more units.

PS4 sales begin 22 February and with over 1-million pre-orders, according to Reuters.

Sony’s PS4 is seen as the console to watch out for, thanks to its unrestricted game sharing and effortless publishing of independent titles, to name but a few of the standout features of this next-gen console. While the Xbox One offers the same functions now, Microsoft had initially locked the Xbox One down with game sharing options that only left the console-hungry crowds confused. Right from the start, the PS4 was ready to welcome fans into the fold.

Outside of this whopping sales target, Sony also officially demoed Vita TV Remote play, said VG247. The Vita TV is a lightweight console that can not only play PS Vita titles and video content, but can stream PS4 games as well to any TV connected to a Vita TV. Sony just wants to keep us gaming, which is never a bad thing.
