Sony’s T3 head-mount display debuts, has wireless and Android support

Ahead of Sony’s official IFA announcement, the HMZ-T3 head-mounted display has made its debut. Although there’s a wireless option and it has Android support, the T3 hasn’t undergone any major changes since last year’s T2.

This head-mount will basically wrap two OLED 720p displays around your face that are aimed to totally immerse your lonesome viewing experience. As reported by Engadget, the device has both full-size and micro-HMDI cables so you can connect your smartphone as well.

The HMZ-T3 is the third iteration and underwent a few tweaks and upgrades such as high-def audio and the ability to connect Android devices like Sony’s Xperia. Engadget also notes that the overall comfort of the deice has been improved. You’ll get 32-bit DAC in-ear headphones, adjustable headbands that would, together with overall design, make long sessions more comfortable. It’s also a massive 10g lighter than its predecessor, making the T3 headset 320g.

There’s also a wireless option which will feature a wireless HD streaming mode with a radius of up to seven meters. This will mean that the head-mounted display will have to stay plugged into a battery that will last you approximately three hours. Apparently the battery is big enough to then slip into your pocket with a chord.

With wearable tech becoming more and more popular, competition is becoming increasingly intense and it’s become easier to find alternatives to Sony’s offering. Last year, the T2 went for about US$894 while alternatives such as the Silicon Micro Display went for US$800 and the Carl Zeiss Cinemizer costs US$750.

In terms of image quality, Oculus Rift for example has one single 720p display while the T3 sports two. Although there’s the expected 1080p Oculus Rift 2.0 revealed at E3 this year.
