20-megapixel cameras coming for new Samsung devices in 2014 [report]

Is Samsung working on a 20-megapixel camera for its 2014 lineup of devices? A source familiar with Samsung’s master plans has said that a 20-megapixel camera is in the works and will be bundled in with (we guess) Galaxy devices by the second half of 2014.

But don’t hold out for a 20-megapixel camera on the rumoured Galaxy S5. We wrote yesterday that Sammy’s latest update to the “S” line of smartphones will gain a 16-megapixel camera. by 2015, Samsung expects all of its phones to have a 20-megapixel camera by “default” said Venturebeat. We can’t confirm or deny these rumours, but a camera with this type of power seems to be in line with how hardware is evolving.

Gartner, a technology research firm, weighed in on the possibility of a 20-megapixel camera: “Consumers appreciate a good camera, but according to our survey research among 22,000 consumers across the world, cameras are not a deciding factor when picking a phone. with Nokia and Sony pushing more into the higher pixel count, I am sure Samsung feels that they need to keep up.”

Samsung of course, already has a range of 20-megapixel cameras and it’ll be interesting to see how it manages to squeeze DSLR quality into a phone. The device with the highest megapixel is the Note III and S4, at 13-megapixels each.

Sony’s on the prowl for a 20-megapixel camera as well and is already selling a 20.7-megapixel camera, namely the Xperia Z1. And then there’s Nokia who have the PureView 808, a 41-megapixel camera encased within the ugliest shell ever. Nokia also has the Lumia 1020, which rocks the same 41-megapixel camera. Nokia is currently the company with the strongest camera phone technology, so lets hope that Samsung is able to bring something new to the table.
