Last month the Pebble Steel was announced at CES together with a dedicated app store filled with software goodness ranging from new services provided by Pandora, ESPN, and Mercedes-Benz. It was touted as “the very first open platform for sharing apps optimized for wearables,” but only available on the web.
Ranging from six categories namely Daily, Tools & Utilities, Notifications, Remotes, Fitness, and Games, this new version is an app store within your smartphone’s app store and is filled with over 1000 apps and watchfaces.
From alerting you to incoming calls, emails, messages and alerts, each smartwatch will support a maximum of eight apps and faces. You can make use of fitness trackers, Twitter feeds, and even remote software to control your smartphone camera.
As written in the official blog announcement, “[Pebble is] actively curating the app store to bring you the best apps and watchfaces every day. In addition, the locker stores your favorite apps and watchfaces and provides a quick and easy way to load and unload them from your Pebble.”
This move officially makes the Pebble e-ink watch an easy to use smartwatch. Previously, Pebble people had to rely on third-party app stores such as MyPebbleFaces for their app leisure.
Why is Android left out in the cold?
“We love Android and feature parity is extremely important for us. We are releasing today a beta of the Pebble Android mobile app that includes the Pebble app store to all developers,” writes Pebble. The Pebble app store will launch on Google Play soon while a beta of the Pebble app for Android which includes the Pebble app store is now available for developers.
