Sony smashes out Xperia Z2 phone and tablet, plus mid-range Xperia M2

Sony’s been a busy little bee at Mobile World Congress 2014. Today sees the launch of three new devices, so far. The self-described “mid-range” Sony Xperia M2, the Xperia Z2 and Xperia X2 Tablet.

Xperia Z2 Tablet

The Z Tablet is something we loved, so we’re glad to see its sequel. The display is a 10.1-inch Full HD TRILUMINOS stunner with front Surround Sound, a weight of 439g which beats the air and it’s waterproof. That alone is the Z2 Tablet’s strongest selling point.

But this is billed as the world’s fastest tablet, and for good reason. We’ve got a 2.3Ghz quad-core CPU combined with an Adreno 330 GPU (the Kindle HDX rocks the same graphics chip). A 6000mAh battery is, frankly insane and will keep the tablet running for days. The tablet launches in South Africa and the rest of the world Q2 2014.

Spec roundup:

– 10.1” Full HD TRILUMINOS Display for mobile with Live Colour LED powered by X-Reality for mobile engine delivers a superb viewing experience

– S-Force Surround Sound and Digital Noise Cancelling for unrivalled audio quality

– World’s slimmest (6.4mm) and lightest (426g for Wi-Fi / 439g for LTE/3G) waterproof (IP55/IP58) tablet for ultimate portability

– Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2.3 GHz quad-core Krait CPUs, 3GB RAM, 4G LTE and Battery STAMINA Mode for fast, lasting performance

– Available in black or white colour variants

Xperia Z2

What we said for the Z2 Tablet, we echo with the Z2 smartphone. The Z2 has the “best ever display”, a 5.2-inch screen which hopefully won’t look as washed-out as the Z1 (which was still an excellent display) and 4K video-recording, all par for the course in 2014 smartphones. It could be the first phone with digital noise-cancelling tech though, according to Sony.

Other specs include a 2.3Ghz quad-core CPU (fairly, ridiculously fast), 3GB RAM, 4G LTE, a 3200mAh battery and a slimness of 8.2mm. Lots of pictures and less interesting facts await those who click here.

Xperia M2

Mid-range smartphones are the heart and soul of the Xperia range. So it’s heartwarming to see an new contender to the mid-range crowd (the last “medium” Xperia was the V).

The M2 will have a large and juicy 4.8-inch display qHD (not TRILUMINOS though, *sobs*), a weight of 148g, an 8MP camera, a 2300mAh battery, Android 4.3 (where the hell is KitKat?), and a 1.2Ghz CPU.

This phone, like the other three Sony products, will all be available in South Africa and the rest of the world Q2 2014.
