We’ve heard plenty from Microsoft about Windows 10 — the OS that will be fundamental to most of Microsoft’s hardware going forward — and now, Windows 10 for phones is now available for download for select devices.
If you happen to own one of the following Lumia devices, you’re in luck, because the update is available today.

If you’re running any other Nokia Lumia (interesting omissions include the Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520, two of the company’s flagships), you’ll have to wait and keep an eye open “over the next few months”, at least according to Joe Belfiore.
It should be noted that the preview will house a slew of bugs, unforeseen issues and temperamental moments of insanity form the code, but it’s all in good faith. But note that GSM support and messaging support are two glaring omissions from the preview.
Microsoft’s Gabe Aul makes sure to stress these points in the company’s latest blog post:
This is the earliest publicly available preview we’ve ever done for Windows on phones. This preview is still very much under development and you’re going to see some rough edges. We’re sharing it with you so you can be with us at every step, and provide your feedback to help make this the best release ever—because it’s the one made for you.
What users will get eventually is universal apps — the ability to sync information between apps on numerous devices — and a new improved settings panel, that still remains the most annoying thing about Windows Phone. And this is just two of many improvements coming to Windows phone users.
How can I upgrade?
If you happen to have one of the phones mentioned, you’ll have to join the Windows Insider Program that allows you access to Microsoft’s pre-release versions of Windows 10. Once there, you can follow the deeper instructions provided.
