Telkom has today announced that it’s expanding its LTE-A (or LTE-Advanced) network to 22 more suburbs across the country, which will mean even faster data access to those in these zones.
LTE-A has theoretical speeds of 1Gbps, but Telkom had demonstrated that over 380Mbps is achievable at present. That’s pretty fast when compared to copper fixed-line internet speeds. Telkom notes that it’s comparable to fibre connections, which it has also begun rolling out to select suburbs.

Gauteng:
Carlswald, Highveld, Halfway Gardens, Houghton Estate, Illovo, Melrose, Midstream Estate, Midlands Estate, Noordwyk, Parktown, Parktown North, Parkview, Greenside, Sandhurst, Saxonwold, Vorna Valley, Kyalami Hills, Killarney, Green Point (the Johannesburg one), Craighall Park.
Western Cape:
Rondebosch, Rosebank, Sea Point, Three Anchor Bay, Mouille Point.
KwaZulu-Natal:
Umhlanga, Prestondale.
Back in 2014, Telkom announced that it will begin rolling out LTE-A to its first batch of over 50 suburbs. And of course, with more devices supporting LTE-A, we should see LTE-A become more useful to South Africans as both network and hardware technology advances.
