Nintendo Wii U’s ‘Splatoon’ tops one million sales worldwide

Splatoon, the Nintendo Wii U‘s social-based third person shooter with a difference, has announced worldwide sales topping one million units in just a few weeks.

It’s quite impressive considering the slowing figures of the Wii U itself and that Splatoon was launched just under a month ago on 28 May.

“That figure includes more than 230,000 physical and digital units sold in Europe, more than 368,000 sold in Japan, more than 476,000 sold in the Americas,” notes the presser, “and an additional 20,000 sold in Australia.”

That Americas figure is the really noteworthy number, which suggests the region’s hunger for competitive shooter games and because it launched a day later in the U.S. than Japan. It’s also intriguing to note that this is one of Nintendo‘s new exclusives for quite some time, and a massive departure from the likes of Kirby, Mario and Link-inspired titles of yore.

“We are pleased this new Wii U exclusive game is capturing the imagination of so many fans across Europe, and look forward to bringing more exclusive titles to both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS this year,” noted Nintendo Europe president Satoru Shibata.

While the Wii U flock waits patiently for the next Zelda Wii U title, Splatoon is doing a fine job of filling the void.
