If you’re one of the many OnePlus One owners (or the many unable to obtain the device) waiting for the Chinese company to launch its new phone, there’s some good news. A date has been set — the 27 July 2015 — for the big reveal of the OnePlus 2, but it not exactly like any smartphone launch we’ve seen before.
The company will reveal the device using OnePlus cardboard VR headsets to reveal their latest smartphone, which the company deems is all in a ploy to “push the envelope.”

“Virtual reality holds a monumental amount of potential. With cutting-edge technology, we can explore corners of the world like never before. We already know that VR will change the face of the entertainment industry, but we’re here to try something new,” the Carl Pei, one of the company’s co-founders, continues on its forum.

Of course, while the virtual reality launch is definitely novel, it’s the phone itself that will likely be star of the show.
The company has been leaking information regularly about the upcoming OnePlus 2, including an updated Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC and a tweaked USB Type-C port. We don’t doubt that claim at all, judging by the success of the OnePlus One, a device that launched the relatively unknown startup into smartphone stardom.
OnePlus will livestream the event and if you’re in South Africa you can catch it at 4am, on 28 July here. If you’re Stateside, the livestream will be available at 7pm PT on 27 July. But don’t worry, you won’t need a VR headset to watch the livestream.
