Microsoft has allowed what it calls Insiders to test Windows 10 for a good while before it was released earlier this month, and now it seems that Sony is following in its stead.
The company will be allowing itchy-fingered gamers to test beta versions of its PlayStation 4 firmware, much like what Microsoft does to those in its Dashboard Preview Program.

It’s a simple affair signing up too. You fill out this application, purchase a PlayStation 4 if you don’t have one, and wait for those beta updates to filter through, which might be as early as early next month.
The PlayStation Blog also suggests you become a PlayStation 4 Forum member too, presumably to bitch and moan about any software issues that may result. Although beta testers will be allowed to roll back to a previously stable software version, if things do go pear shaped.
“The beta program will start in early September,” notes the PlayStation Blog, “and we’ll have more information on the new features included at that time.
“We are accepting a limited number of beta testers, so if you’re interested, sign up sooner rather than later.”
It seems an intelligent ploy for Sony as well, considering the leaps and bounds Microsoft’s atrocious Xbox One software has progressed, thanks to its Dashboard Preview Program, and Windows 10’s strong development since its inception back in January.
The real question is: will you take the plunge? Let us know in the comments.
