It’s that time of the year again, when South Africans adopt another American tradition. Although turkey-nibbling is usually reserved for Christmas Day in sunny South Africa, Black Friday is definitively earmarked as the day after Thanksgiving across the world. Its retailers’ way of showing consumers thanks for the lucrative year that has been, and subsequently drops the prices of some of the most wanted items available.
With respect to your interest for half-price dog beds and patio tables, as far as we’re concerned, we’re only really interested in the tech.
So, what can we expect from some of South Africa’s prominent retailers across the big bad world and the world wide web?
Tips and advice
Keep locked to Gearburn’s coverage of the Black Friday South Africa deals, and Cyber Week specials as they evolve over the next few days. But before you embark on the great sale, here are a few tips:
- Make sure your PC, web browsers and, and internet security software is up to date.
- If possible, make sure you’re pay via credit or cheque card. Many online stores won’t offer instant EFT and will only process them once they reflect in their bank account.
- If you bank offers 3D Secure on your card then make sure it’s correctly setup.
- Make sure your TV licence is valid and on hand.
- If possible, know what you want to purchase or achieve before hand. The longer you delay the purchase the greater the chance of it selling out.
If you’ve checked all of those off your list, all we can say is “let’s go shopping.”
Dion Wired
Local retailer Dion Wired will also boast Black Friday specials online only. The company has a dedicated portal for those visiting via digital devices, with up to 50% off products quoted. All specials are limited to one per customer. Specials will begin at midnight on 27 November, but there’s no word on when they’ll end.
Esquire
Local distributor Esquire resisted dubbing its deals celebration a Black Friday, but rather going for a Rainbow Week approach. This effectively means that the company’s unveiling specials throughout the week.
There are two issues though: the specials are only available for those who can get to Midrand, and the company notes that all deals are “strictly [cash on delivery] COD.”
Still, it’s hard to look beyond a 23.8-inch AOC monitor for R1699.
Have a look at the company’s other specials here.

The perennial specials king, Takealot hasn’t been revealing too much about its Black Friday ambitions, but we can almost bet that it’ll be offering something interesting. Currently, the site has two concurrent special streams — The Motherload, and the usual Daily Deals.
We’ll update with more news as soon as we get it, but we suggest that you keep an eagle eye on it too.
