Canon EOS 80D gunning for developing photographers, movie makers

Canon has today announced its new DSLR camera — the EOS 80D — featuring a number of enthusiast features and a wad of new technologies to boot.

The body’s aimed at consumers looking to improve their video and photography skills, while there’s also enough on paper to keep top level snappers very happy.

The Canon EOS 80D features the company’s new 24.2MP CMOS sensor alongside the company’s DIGIC 6 processor, a 45 cross-point autofocus system and a 7fps shooting rate — features that will appeal to those looking for a multi-use DSLR.

Canon notes that the autofocus system can be tweaked as well:

Both AF speed and AF tracking sensitivity can also be easily adjusted, giving you complete control over the pace and responsiveness of the AF to suit the style of your movie.

These are made more usable by the 3.0-inch screen and the vast 100-25 600 ISO range, which Canon claims will work under moonlight.

Rounding up the package, there’s a headphone jack, a microphone jack, NFC and WiFi, to improve transfers between devices.

The company also announced a new lens to “match the versatility of the EOS 80D” dubbed the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. Canon claims that the lens “provides high performance auto-focus for movies and stills with the focal range to shoot wide, or up close.”

There’s also a new Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1, which allows for smoother zoom transitioning for movie makers. It also boasts a WiFi remote, to ensure that the camera remains undisturbed by human touch.

The Canon EOS 80D is now available worldwide, but we’ve reached out to Canon SA for local pricing details.
