The Wii U is Nintendo’s biggest sales flop since the Virtual Boy and, with the Switch closer to release, the firm has reportedly decided to end production of the ill-fated console this week.
According to Eurogamer, citing multiple sources, the company’s Japanese production line will cease operations this week after the deadline for orders passed. It’s understood that a small number of orders were placed for the final production run.

The company has only sold 13.3 million Wii U consoles, compared to the Nintendo GameCube’s estimated 21.7 million units sold. It’s a rather sobering figure for Nintendo, especially when the GameCube was considered a sales flop by many – although Nintendo did sell the older console at a profit.

The move also comes as Nintendo readies its innovative Switch console for release. The new machine features a tablet-style form factor, allowing you to game on the go, but you also have the ability to dock the Switch for TV play.
Nintendo’s new console is set for a March 2017 release, but pricing and local availability has yet to be confirmed. However, confirmed titles include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, new Dragon Quest games and (surprise!) Just Dance 2017.
