4K HDR television sets have received a ton of hype in recent months, in no small part due to the PS4 Pro, Xbox One S, Xbox Scorpio and streaming services supporting the standards.
LG, Samsung and other brands have sensed a major opportunity in this regard, having sold TVs with this tech for some time now. But the biggest obstacle is price, with many 4K HDR television sets being rather expensive.

Still, we’re seeing some 4K sets with claimed HDR functionality hovering just above the R10 000 price window or just a touch under this mark… So the question then is just how long it will take until we see 4K HDR sets meaningfully breach the sub-R10 000 mark?
“Our expectation is within one year,” said Dean Daffue, go-to-market manager for LG Electronics South Africa, in an email to Gearburn.
“Based on the market trend HDR is becoming the next best level of content. The great thing about our new TV range is that you can activate the HDR effect on your TV without having HDR content playing, much like 4K up-scaling,” he added, saying that he believed HDR will become the norm in households.
The LG representative said that they have seen a noticeable uptick in 4K sales as well.
“SA customers are now coming in asking for a 4K TV — this has taken about two years to get to this point,” Daffue answered.
