Samsung has traditionally produced a Mini version of its flagship smartphone, reducing the horsepower and overall spec sheet in order to meet a mid-range price tag. We haven’t seen a Mini variant in a few years though, but a new report claims that a Galaxy S8 Mini is on the way.
According to Phone Radar, citing a “Samsung Insider”, the company isn’t skimping on the specs for a smaller Galaxy S8 device. It’s claimed that the new smartphone will largely have the same internal specifications as the bigger variants, down to the Snapdragon 835 (or presumably Exynos 8895) chip, 4GB of RAM and cameras.

However, the phone will apparently see a smaller 5.3-inch screen to go with the smaller body, with the high screen/body ratio of the larger phones being intact as well. If true, it’s rather interesting to see a 5.3-inch display on a ‘Mini’ device. Otherwise, there hasn’t been word on screen resolution just yet.
It’s also worth noting that, although the battery size hasn’t been revealed, we’d expect a smaller battery thanks to the smaller body.
Otherwise, we haven’t heard about extra features, such as IP68 water resistance or an iris scanner.
As for the price tag, we believe the report’s suggestion of a 50% lower price isn’t accurate. After all, why buy the larger devices then? Nevertheless, if there is indeed a Galaxy S8 Mini, then we can expect a slightly cheaper price.
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ were officially revealed last week and, yes, they’ll be coming to South Africa on 5 May. Expect to pay R15 499 for the S8 and R17 499 for the S8+.
