Windows has traditionally been more of a battery hog compared to Apple and Google‘s platforms, but Windows 10 has made significant strides. Now, the company has introduced a new feature to save even more juice.

Dubbed Power Throttling, this new feature effectively aims to get work done with only a small hit to the battery.

“With ‘Power Throttling’, when background work is running, Windows places the CPU in its most energy efficient operating modes — work gets done, but the minimal possible battery is spent on that work,” Microsoft explains on its Windows blog.

The company says the feature is made possible by a “sophisticated detection system” which identifies your most important tasks. These tasks include apps in the foreground, background music and more.

The new Power Throttling feature in Windows 10 should result in a slightly longer-lasting laptop

Microsoft adds that the feature resulted in 11% savings in CPU power consumption in “some of the most strenuous” cases.

The company says you’ll need a sixth generation or later Intel Core series processor to take advantage of the feature.

The Power Throttling feature also comes after Microsoft introduced a Game Mode in Windows 10, as part of the Creators Update. This effectively frees up more resources for your gaming sessions — but does it actually work?

Well, PC World found that it didn’t make a difference for high-end gaming rigs, but low-end machines should see a notable difference in some situations.
