The Samsung Galaxy S8 (review) is arguably the best mobile platform for virtual reality (VR) right now. The Gear VR is one of the better headsets around, packing plenty of Oculus-exclusive goodies — then there’s the S8 itself.
The phone packs a punch thanks to its internals, but it also delivers a super sharp AMOLED screen that makes it ideal for VR experiences. Still, what if you want Google’s Daydream apps on the handset?

Well, earlier this year we saw Google confirm that it would be bringing Daydream apps to the S8. Now, Google’s GoogleVR Twitter account has tweeted (obviously) that the update is actually being sent out to devices now.

So what does Daydream VR entail? It’s essentially a collection of VR-enabled Google apps that are enhanced for Google’s certified peripherals and Cardboard. So that means you’ve got the likes of YouTube, Google Photos and Google Maps in VR, as well as the Play Store.
The Daydream suite has also received new features earlier this year, allowing you to cast your VR environment onto an external display and letting you watch YouTube videos in VR with other people.
We’ve asked Samsung about the update coming to South Africa, as well as Google’s representatives regarding Daydream hardware in the country. We’ll update the article when we receive a response.
