ICYMI: Honor smartphones now available via Takealot

Huawei,Honor,Honor 7X

It’s taken a while, but Huawei‘s Honor sub-brand is now available locally via Takealot, we noticed (are we late to the party?).

The Honor brand of phones pack similar specifications to Huawei’s main lineup, but feature different designs and a generally cheaper price tag. For instance, the Honor 8 had a cheaper price internationally, while also featuring near-identical specs to the Huawei P9 (review).

The Honor sub-brand also distinguished itself from Huawei’s phones by being online-exclusive at first.

In terms of devices available in South Africa, they bear quite a resemblance to the recently launched Huawei P Smart. There’s the R3499 Honor 9 Lite, which is essentially the P Smart but with a 13MP+2MP dual camera system on the front too (as opposed to 8MPs).

Then there’s the R4999 Honor 7X, which differs from the P Smart by having an upgraded 16MP+2MP rear camera setup (instead of 13MP+2MP), a slightly larger battery (3340mAh instead of 3000mAh) and a slightly larger display (5.93-inches).

Otherwise, both phones feature the same mid-range Kirin 659 chipset, microUSB port, rear fingerprint scanners and 18:9 screen ratio as the P Smart.

The Honor 9 Lite certainly looks like the pick of the bunch here, offering dual cameras on the front for R500 less than the P Smart. As for the Honor 7X? At R1000 more, you have to wonder if you’re getting enough upgrade for your cash…

Here’s hoping we see devices like the Honor 7C, View 10 and Honor 8…
