In a year that has seen a myriad of mirrorless camera launches, this week Canon announced its latest entry into the bridge camera market.

Called the PowerShot SX70 HS, Canon notes that it’s “capable of handling all types of shooting scenario, without the need to carry multiple lenses”.

This isn’t just marketing speak either. The PowerShot features a 65 times zoom lens effectively extending its focal length to a 2730mm lens equivalent.

And as holding steady with the lens fully extended could prove difficult, Canon has also bolted on its Zoom Frame Assist Lock function which the company claims “helps maintain framing when taking super-telephoto images, suitable for capturing fast-moving sports or wildlife”.

Other notable features include:

  • A larger 20.3MP 1/2.3-type CMOS sensor when compared to the outgoing SX60’s 16.1MP sensor.
  • Continuous autofocus at 5.7 frames per second even in low light.
  • 10 fps continuous shooting.
  • 4K video recording.
  • Remote Live View for using your smartphone as a remote shutter.
  • A 7.5 inch Vari-Angle LCD screen.

The PowerShot SX70 HS will be available in South Africa from November and will be priced at R8499.
