Huawei Mate 20, 20 Pro and 20X are now official

Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Huawei unveiled three devices at a swanky event in London last night, including two familar devices with the Mate moniker, and another slightly different.

For starters, the company pulled the curtain on the Huawei Mate 20, arguably the least interesting of the three devices.

Huawei Mate 20

It sports a 6.5 inch LCD waterdrop-notch screen with a 2244×1080 resolution, the Kirin 980 chipset at its heart, internal storage of 128GB and a RAM figure of 6GB.

The triple rear camera setup features a 12MP primary snapper, a 16MP wide angle camera, and an 8MP telephoto camera. Up front, you’ll also find a 24MP camera.

It also features a 4000mAh battery, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 5.0 support, and Huawei’s fast charging technology.

But while this phone is clearly set to compete against the likes of the iPhone XR, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is aimed squarely at the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and iPhone XS Max.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro

It features a smaller OLED screen at 6.39 inches, but it packs more pixels. 3120×1440, to be exact. It also sports a larger notch, which reportedly houses a host of facial recognition hardware to unlock the phone.

Internally, storage, RAM and the chipset remain the same as the Mate 20, but the camera setup differs.

While still employing three snappers at the rear, the primary wide camera features a 40MP sensor, an “ultra wide” camera sports a 20MP unit, while an 8MP camera serves as the telephoto lens, allowing for five times optical zoom.

Up front, a 24MP selfie camera can also be found.

The phone doesn’t sport a headphone jack, but it can reverse charge other phones wirelessly from its 4200mAh battery. It too sports support for Qi wireless chargers.

Huawei Mate 20X

Finally, the Huawei Mate 20X was the big surprise. And pun intended.

It sports all the hardware of the Huawei Mate 20, but packs a 7.2 inch screen.

Pixel density is a lot lower than most flagships, thanks to the 2244×1080 resolution, and the phone itself weighs in well over 200 grams.

It does features the same camera setup as the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but packs a 5000mAh battery.

There’s no word on how much the Huawei Mate 20 series will cost in South Africa, but expect more details from the devices’ local launch in the coming weeks.
