We’ve some good news for Sony fans. For a while many believed that the company was set to pull out of South Africa, citing stagnating sales. But that’s not entirely true.
While the Xperia 1 was announced on Monday at MWC 2019, today Sony Mobile announced that its flagship Xperia 1 will arrive in South Africa in July 2019.

Clearly, Sony Mobile isn’t leaving the African market, at least not as a smartphone seller, just yet.
As for the Xperia 1’s specifications, enjoy our lengthy report of its internals and that 6.5 inch 4K OLED screen.
While we have a launch date, the Japanese firm failed to disclose a price. However, it seems the three mid-range devices — Xperia 10, 10 Plus and L3 — which also debuted at MWC 2019 are heading to our shores.
The recommended retail prices for these are as follows:
- Xperia 10 Plus – R8999
- Xperia 10 – R6499
- Xperia L3 – R4499
These devices will be available on Vodacom first from 20 March, and will arrive on other networks on 1 April. Pre-orders for Vodacom user will open next week.
The South African market can do with more competition at the flagship smartphone level, especially with 2019 shaping up to be one of the most exciting for consumers in recent memory.
