Samsung delays its foldable phone launch until ‘further improvements’ are made

Samsung Galaxy Fold 1

For those patiently waiting for the beginning of the foldable smartphone revolution, it seems that Samsung’s going to make you wait a little big longer.

After a number of devices’ displays broke within two days of their review, Samsung has postponed the launch of the Galaxy Fold indefinitely. This includes the launch in South Africa.

In a “proactive media statement” sent to Memeburn, in which the Korean company lauds its invention of a “completely new mobile category”, it admitted that the Fold’s design “needs further improvements”.

“To fully evaluate this feedback and run further internal tests, we have decided to delay the release of the Galaxy Fold,” the company confirmed.

“Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance.”

The company added that it will “strengthen” the display’s protection as well as “enhance” the care instructions so users don’t rip the wrong layer of plastic off the device (like some reviewers have done).

While failing to give a revised release date, Samsung did note it will “announce the release date in the coming weeks”.
