Huawei South Africa on Thursday announced the availability of its FreeLace wireless earphones.
The earbuds, which aren’t truly wireless, employ a unique pairing system that requires the user to plug an earphone into the phone via a USB-C port.

“Separating the right earbud and its cable from the volume buttons reveals a USB Type-C connector, which can be inserted into the USB Type-C port of any Huawei smartphone running EMUI 9.1 for quick and easy Bluetooth pairing via Huawei HiPair,” the company explained.
“This Huawei proprietary technology eliminates the often time-consuming and hit-and-miss process of pairing Bluetooth peripherals with smartphones.”
Once connected, audio is pushed through to your ears via Bluetooth. 9.2 mm drivers in each earbud reportedly provide the wearer with “punchy bass and smooth treble”.
The USB-C port is also used to charge the earbuds, with a five-minute charge returning four hours of playback, Huawei noted. Overall, a full charge will give users 18 hours of music playback, and 13 hours of phone chatting.
There’s also an in-line control unit allowing users to increase or decrease volume, access their voice assistant, or skip the currently playing track.
The FreeLace buds are available in two colours — black and “amber sunrise” — for R2499.
