The lowly Nokia 1, which debuted in South Africa in April 2018, is now getting its Android 9 Pie update. The news broke via a tweet from HMD Global’s chief product officer Juho Sarvikas on Tuesday.
“Excited to share that our most affordable smartphone, Nokia 1, upgrades to Android 9 Pie starting today,” read the tweet.

The phone which originally launched at R999, runs Android Go, the stripped-down version of Android suited for more modest hardware. It also features a 4.5 inch display, 1GB of RAM, a quad-core Mediatek MT6737M chipset, and a 5MP rear camera. It also supports 4G networks and is powered by a 2150mAh battery.
The Nokia 1 joins a number of other Nokia devices also sporting Android’s latest update, including the Nokia 9 PureView, Nokia 7 Plus and others.
