With folding phones (or ridiculously expensive folding tablets) waiting in the wings, it seems that 2019 is also the year for cheap tablets to make a comeback.

Samsung, rather silently on Friday, announced its new player in the segment, the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 2019.

The 8-inch tablet “comes with a lightweight and refined metallic design and a suite of value-added features,” said Samsung in a press release.

What that means in numbers is a weight of 345 grams, a thickness of 8mm and a battery size of 5100mAh. The screen packs 1280×800 pixels, giving it a 16:10 aspect ratio.

Internally, the Galaxy Tab A 2019 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 429 chipset — that’s eight ARM Cortex-A53 cores at 2.0GHz — 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. That latter number can be buffed through its microSD card slot.

Buyers are also getting an 8MP rear snapper and 2MP up front, while dual speakers, WiFi 802.11n, and Bluetooth 4.2 also feature.

Samsung’s also employing Android 9.0 Pie on the tablet.

Pricing and availability for global markets (not just SA) are unavailable at present, but this thing will likely compete against Huawei’s MediaPad M5 Lite should it enter our market.
