Huawei on Thursday lifted the lid on its P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus flagship smartphones.
The three devices now headline the company’s post-Google smartphone onslaught, and will be the first high-end devices to launch in South Africa without Google Mobile Services.

This means they’ll run Android 10-based EMUI 10. You’ll still have access to Android apps, but you won’t be able to use a number of Google products.
Beyond the software, all four devices pack hardware you’d expect to find on 2020 devices, including multiple cameras and large batteries.
All devices run the HiSilicon Kirin 990 chipset with 8GB of RAM, WiFi 6, 5G and eSIM support too.
Huawei P40
The cheapest of the trio, the P40 sports a 6.1-inch display with a 2340×1080 resolution, IP53 water and dust resistance, an under display fingerprint sensor, and an oval selfie camera cutout.
The latter’s pretty large too, housing a 32MP selfie camera alongside an infrared sensor for biometrics.
At the rear, the phone sports three cameras: a 50MP primary snapper, an 8MP telephoto, and a 16MP ultrawide.
Unlike the P30, there’s no headphone jack, but there is 22.5W charging via a USB-C port for the 3800mAh battery.
Finally, a 128GB storage option will be offered in South Africa, but it can be expanded using Huawei’s Nano Memory cards.
Huawei P40 Pro
The Pro packs 256GB of internal storage and also supports Nano Memory expansion if need be.
The display’s larger too at 6.58-inches and sports a 2640×1200 resolution. Buyers will also get a 90Hz refresh rate with support for HDR10 too.
At the rear the 50MP primary camera is joined by a 40MP ultrawide and a 12MP periscope zoom camera with 5x optical zoom. A time of flight sensor joins the three.
Up front, the same selfie camera setup as the P40 can be found.
The phone also packs a 4200mAh battery with 40W fast charging and 27W wireless and reverse wireless charging.
Huawei P40 Pro Plus
Finally, the grand daddy of the trio, the P40 Pro Plus packs an additional 8MP zoom camera alongside the P40 Pro’s four sensors. Zoom range has also been buffed to 100x.
The phone features the same display, selfie cameras, battery size and IP68 rating as the P40 Pro. Wireless charging has been buffed to 40W though.
Storage sizes offered in South Africa will be pushed to 512GB, while the two devices also sport a ceramic rear plate and frame.
