Fitbit on Tuesday announced the launch of its first device since its possible purchase by Google was announced late last year.

The Fitbit Charge 4 is a refresh of one of its more popular ranges, walking the line between excellent features and affordable price.

Now included in the Charge 4 is a built-in GPS, which means you can now leave your phone at home when going for a run.

NFC also makes its debut on the Charge, allowing users to complete payments using Fitbit Pay.

The band’s now water resistant up to 50 metres too, while the traditional Fitbit sleep tracking features are also included on the Charge 4. Spotify support also features.

It does get an exclusive feature though, dubbed Active Zone minutes.

Active Zone Minutes uses your personalised heart rate zones to track your effort for any energizing activity, whether doing a HIIT workout, power yoga or taking a vigorous walk outside,” explains Fitbit.

“Earn credit for each minute of moderate activity in fat burn zone and double the credit for vigorous activity in cardio and peak zones — Active Zone Minutes does the math for you so you can quickly understand how many you need to reach your daily and weekly goals.”

The company notes that this will roll out to other smartwatches in due course.

The Charge 4 will be available in SA once the lockdown is over from R2999. There’s also a special edition retailing for R400 more and includes “an exclusive granite reflective/black woven band plus a classic black band to easily swap out for workouts or a sportier look“.
