PS5: Sony announces no PlayStation 5 consoles will be sold in-store on launch day

In a surprise announcement, Sony has said that the new PlayStation 5 (PS5) will only be available to buy online on its launch day.

The decision was made due to the pandemic, according to Sony. The company hopes to prevent long queues and the tradition of camping outside stores with its decision.

The console will launch on 12 November in initial markets. Meanwhile, it has a 19 November release date for South Africa.

However, it seems that the online-only launch day decision applies to all markets.

“No units will be available in-store for purchase on launch day (November 12 or November 19, depending on your region) – please don’t plan on camping out or lining up at your local retailer on launch day in hopes of finding a PS5 console for purchase,” Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, said in a blog post.

“Be safe, stay home, and place your order online.”

Shuman states that those who have pre-ordered the device for collection will still be able to do this. But you will be expected to do so at your designated collection appointment.

Sony encourages customers to confirm the details for collection with their local retailer.

**We have reached out to the local distributors for the PS5 to find out how the decision will be applied locally and will update with any further details.
