The Audi Airomorph might be the craziest, most innovative concept car ever [Gallery]

So we already know that students can build incredible cars under the right circumstances, but what if they don’t actually have to build the car? What if they just have to design it? Well, if you’re Eric Kim — a graduate at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California — then you come up with something completely extraordinary.

Working in concert with Audi AG, at the companyâ€s headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany, the concept is meant to represent the future of Le Mans racing. Inspired by a Catamaran, the Airomorph would be made of a single sheet of cloth layered over its frame, and the skin from a silver expansion-resistant textile, which has the capability to stretch across movable metal wires controlled by hydraulic actuators. This apparently allows the body to have a continuous motion and achieve the best driving conditions possible.

Each wheel pod placement, meanwhile, has a cable attached to it. These cables are highly durable and can be increased and decreased in size, like a coiled spring, thus allowing the body shape morphing.

All we know is, if this is the future of Le Mans, then we could well be watching for the beauty of the cars as much as the racing in the next few years.
