How safe is the Volvo XC90? Allegedly safe enough for Volvo to speed it up a bit. The new R-Design package of the world’s latest SUV has today been uncovered by the Swedes, and it’s simply scrumptious.
For those who dare not take their beloved off-roaders off-road, the package enhances the SUV’s street credibility, handling and, thanks in part to the Drive-E hybrid powertrains, speed with around 400-horsepower on tap.

We’ve previously noted the car’s extensive safety systems and driver aids, and one will probably need all of them chucking this thing into the corners. But isn’t it beautiful? We might be witnessing the very first attractive SUV that doesn’t look bulky or cumbersome.
The exterior gets 22″ wheels, dual tailpipes and an imposing grate-style grill. The interior isn’t ignored either, boasting a 12.3″ touchscreen, which allows drivers grit-level control of the car’s audio, performance and other gizmos. A few accents here and there remind the driver that this is a special car. Think Pimp My Ride.
They sell fast too — Volvo noted that the previous launch model dubbed the “black First Edition” sold out in just 47 hours. Have a look at the gallery below, and you can understand why.
