Airbag deploying 1/100th of a second late is a thing of terrible beauty

There are huge numbers of people all around the globe who owe the fact that they’re still alive to airbags. In order for this vital piece of safety technology to be effective though, it has to be completely functional.

It’s also worth remembering that airbags inflate so rapidly that their doing so at the wrong time can cause serious damage.

So how bad would it be if a dysfunctional airbag were to deploy 1/100th of a second early, for instance?

Well if this video from Honda is to be believed, the results could be catastrophic.

The video is part of a campaign by the Jampanese auto giant to ensure that the people driving its cars fit genuine Honda parts when they need to be replaced.

As Car and Driver notes the video is obviously a scare tactic, although in this instance we’d say that it’s probably warranted.

That said, Honda doesn’t exactly have the best track-record when it comes to airbags itself.

Here’s hoping it’s been working on that.
