The new Rolls Royce Dawn: a four-seater convertible for the ultra-rich [Gallery]

Has it ever bothered you that your current luxury convertible only really allows you take a single passenger on your Sunday afternoon drives through the countryside? Well you can rest easy knowing that Rolls Royce has got your back.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show, the luxury automaker today gave the world its first “in-the-flesh” look at the Dawn — its brand new open-top.

According to Rolls, the aim of the Dawn was to create a car which looks as good with its roof up as it does with with it down. For that reason, it says, it couldn’t simply build a drop-top Wraith, which 80% of the exterior body panels of the new Dawn are newly designed.

“Our new Rolls-Royce Dawn promises a striking, seductive encounter like no other Rolls-Royce to date, and begins a new age of open-top, super-luxury motoring. Dawn is a beautiful new motor car that offers the most uncompromised open-top motoring experience in the world. It will be the most social of super-luxury drophead motor cars for those who wish to bathe in the sunlight of the world’s most exclusive social hotspots. Quite simply, it is the sexiest Rolls-Royce ever built.”

Unlike most drop tops, Rolls Royce claims the Dawn has space for four actual adults. That’s because it wants trips in the dawn to be a social experience:

“At Rolls-Royce, we pride ourselves as creators of fine motor cars that also serve as social spaces,” says Giles Taylor, Director of Design at Rolls Royce. “The idea of creating a car like Dawn that can be used in comfort by only two adults on a day to day basis is anathema. In creating Dawn we have accepted no compromise to the comfort and luxury of four adults who want to travel together in the pinnacle of style.”

It also says it spent some serious time and effort on the roof, which it claims operates in almost complete silence in just over 20 seconds at a cruising speed of up to 50km/h.
