Volkswagen takes first place in SA’s GTC series

Daniel Rowe and his Volkswagen team took first place at the Sasol GTC Series on 26 November 2016 at the Zwartkops Raceway. Rowe outdid himself by winning both GTC production races on the same day, claiming his first national title.

“I’m very happy right now. My first national motorsport title and really grateful I could win this for Volkswagen. I think we’ve done it in style this year, winning just about every race and claiming most of the pole positions as well,” said Rowe.

“I put in a lot of effort, a lot of training, both physical and mental and watched the race footage over and over to analyse every moment in the car. Preparation has been the key and I think I put in more effort than the other drivers to ensure better results,” Rowe continued.

The final round of the GTC Series will be an interesting one, although Rowe has already won the championship, he will still be competing. This will be the final run for Volkswagen and Rowe in the Motorsport Golf GTI before handing over to Keagan Masters, who is set to take over in 2017 as a third-place finisher.

Volkswagen finishes strong at the Sasol GTC series

“The Volkswagen Motorsport effort to encourage group and progression is already reaping rewards,” said head of Volkswagen Motorsport, Mike Rowe.

“We have one national title, a promising new driver taking over next year and an opportunity to encourage more competitors into the sport as they see a clear progression develop and a chance to build on their motorsport careers,” Mike continued.

The podium wasn’t just occupied by Rowe, as Mandla Mdakane started the weekend off with the second-quickest qualifying time. Mdakane finished fourth in the first race, second in the second race and third place overall for the day.

If Mdakane picks up another favourable result in the final round in East London, it could lead to a one-two finish for Volkswagen in the championship.
