“The GTI brand has been around for 39 years and since then it has become an absolute icon, from the streets of Soweto to Sandton, Umlazi to Umhlanga and Constantia to Mitchell’s Plain, it’s a brand that has entrenched itself in the hearts and minds of many South Africans,” Head of Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand, Steffen Knapp, said in a statement.

The Golf 8 GTi will officially launch in South Africa in October.
Available with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the car will retail for R699 300.
To celebrate the local launch, Volkswagen will host a series of ‘car meets’ to introduce the car to consumers. The events will take place in parking lots in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban.
Those interested in attending the event can earn a ticket by downloading and playing the GTI8OnTour game.
In the game, players drive the Golf 8 GTi and clock their fastest time on a national leaderboard. There are weekly prizes available for the fastest lap times and players can set as many times as they want.
If their times are fast enough, they can earn a ticket to one of the three events. There, they will get to participate in the Goodyear GTi 100m Speed Dash and drive with a Volkswagen Advanced Driving instructor.
The events will also feature meetups with local car clubs, merchandise stalls, food trucks, and live DJs.
The Golf 8 GTi car meets will take place on the following dates and locations:
- Cape Town: 2 October; CTICC parkade
- Durban: 9 October; Cornubia Mall parkade
- Johannesburg: 16 October; Fourways Mall parkade
