Sony announces 2.1-million PS4 consoles sold since launch
…and that’s before Christmas. In a recent blog post, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 has managed to win the hearts (wallets at least) of more than 2.1-million gamers across North America and the European region. The PlayStation 4 was released in the UK last week and has since become the fastest-selling console to date.
This incredible milestone comes after Microsoft launched its Xbox One about a week earlier than Sony did. According to the Telegraph, “Sony had sold over 250,000 PlayStation 4 consoles in just 48 hours in the UK, blowing first weekend sales of the Xbox One out of the water.”
Some analysts seem to suggest that Microsoft has only sold 150,000 Xbox One consoles in the UK during the first 48 hours after its launch.
15 November, with the launch of the console in North America, Sony announced that more than a record-breaking 1-million consoles have been sold under 24 hours. The Japanese tech giant also said last month that it has managed to sell a massive 80-million PlayStation 3 consoles since 2006.
These indicators of have its hiccups though. Last week Sony “made the decision to switch off a couple of features for European customers on day one. These features will then be switched back on a few days later, once the intensity of launch day calms down.” Still, users reported issues as the network slowed down.
Either way, President and Group CEO of Sony Andrew House, said in the blog post, “The best part: the PS4 journey has just begun. In addition to an incredible line-up of PS4 games from the best developers in the world, we will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead.” One of the greatest criticisms of the console was the lack of titles at launch.
House further notes, “While PS4′s capabilities will continue to evolve, our commitment to gamers and breakthrough entertainment remains steadfast. We believe that videogames represent the pinnacle of artistry and entertainment, and we will work tirelessly to make sure that PlayStation remains the best place to play.”
The PS4 is yet to make its way to 32 other markets across the globe this holiday season so expect the numbers to sore even further.
