Five reasons why you should go see The Social Network
The much-anticipated, controversial movie about the founding of social networking behemoth Facebook, simply called The Social Network, opens in cinemas around South Africa today. The staff of Memeburn were invited to a sneak preview by Integr8, and came out inspired and moved, for very different reasons.
Here are 5 very different reasons you should go see the movie:
Jeremy Daniel: Sheer inspiration. If you have the drive and the passion to build something that can change the world, then this movie acts as a double espresso to your ambition. The story of a social misfit who gets his revenge on the world by working harder, being smarter and staying true to his vision will strike a chord with anyone who believes they have an idea that could change the world.
Melissa Chetty: If you’re not interested in seeing the movie, do it for Armie Hammer who plays the role of both Winklevoss twins, Tyler and Cameron. The Winklevii, as Zuckerberg calls them, steal the show with some of the funniest lines in the film: “I’m 6’5”, 220 pounds, and there are two of me.” Armie Hammer is so hot, I didn’t even realise Justin Timberlake was in the movie.
Ryan Gordon: Being the geek in the office, my popcorn was demolished during the opening scenes, where a pissed off Zuckerburg is seen coding his first site, Facemash. Through a riveting montage, Zuckerberg describes his hacking methods and how he got hold of those first elusive Harvard final house facebooks to populate the site. This is tantamount to crack for coders and my only regret was not taking notes. A must see for the geek fandom.
Hendri Lategan:The movie is brilliantly scripted, with strong performances from Jesse Eisenberg and his supporting cast. Director David Fincher (Fight Club, Panic Room, Se7en) puts his unique mark on the film with his trademark grittiness, excellent pacing and the uncanny ability to make anything (even web development) look cool. The movie perfectly captures the zeitgeist of our generation in all its merits and vices. Regardless of whether the film is entirely accurate or not, it is thoroughly entertaining and quite possibly, in my opinion, one of the best films of the year.
Dan Bailey: Forget all that computer stuff. This is a movie about rowing, the greatest sport of all time.
