Hatchet wielding hitchhiker, viral star Kai wanted for murder
Kai, the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker who shot to viral fame after saving a woman from her attacker, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The internet star, whose real name is Caleb McGillvary, was arrested at a Philadelphia bus station after allegedly beating a lawyer to death inside his home, reports the Associated Press.
McGillvary was charged with killing Joseph Galfy, Jr, a New Jersey attorney who was found dead two days after authorities said he met McGillvary in New York City. Galfy was reportedly found wearing only his underwear and socks by police who went to his home to check on his well-being.
According to prosecutor Theodore Romankow, statements posted on McGillvary’s Facebook page following the homicide indicated the encounter was sexual in nature. One post in particular seems to have raised serious alarm bells. In the post McGillvary asks “what would you do?” if you found you woke up in a stranger’s house and found you’d been sexually assaulted. One commenter suggests hitting him with a hatchet, to which McGillvary replies “I like your idea.”
“I believe that everyone is a little safer with this person off the streets,” Romankow said.
McGillvary became an internet star after intervening in an apparently unprovoked attack which led to charges of attempted murder. His interview with a local TV station shortly after the incident went viral led to appearances on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. He will be returned to New Jersey to face the charges and is being held on US$3-million bail.
